24 of the World’s Most Promising Violonists to Compete in Montreal

Montreal, March 8, 2016 – 24 violinists, 16 women and 8 men from 13 countries with an average age of 23, have been selected to participate in the 15th Concours musical international de Montréal (CMIM). The highest number of candidates are from the Unites States (7) and South Korea (6), followed by Japan (3) and France (2). The remaining nine countries are represented by one participant each: Bulgaria, China, Finland, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Russia, Taiwan and Ukraine. The preselection jury included Jonathan Crow, Boris Kuschnir, Douglas McNabney, Lucie Robert, and Andrew Wan. From May 22 to June 2, 2016, be the first to discover these young virtuosos as they compete for over $86,000 in prizes.

The international jury for this editon includes: Pierre Amoyal (France); Boris Brott (Canada); Boris Garlitsky (Russia); Ida Kavafian (Armenia/United States); Mihaela Martin (Romania); Vera Tsu Wei-Ling (China); and Kathleen Winkler (United States). André Bourbeau, Co-Founder and Chairman of the CMIM, will act as non-voting president of the jury.

Paganini Award

The CMIM is pleased to add yet another special prize, the $1,000 Paganini Award, which brings the total prize money to $86,500. Offered by E. Noël Spinelli, C.M., C.Q., this prize will be awarded for the best performance in the quarter-finals of a Caprice from Niccolò Paganini’s Opus 1.

Information And Box Office

The quarter-final (May 23 to May 25) and semi-final rounds (May 27 & 28) will be held at Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Both the finals (May 30 & 31) and gala concert (June 2) at Maison symphonique with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal led by Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero.
