On this CD Marc-André Hamelin turns his attention to the music of Brazilian composer Villa-Lobos, who wrote some 200 piano works. Hamelin’s lightning finger-work (as in his dazzling Polichinelle) is both savage and poetic on this disc. Rudepoêma is the composer’s master-work and one of the most difficult pieces ever written, despite its inherent pianistic qualities. Hamelin gives it an intensive interpretation that lets the listener grasp the primitive influences (at times reminiscent of Le Sacre du printemps) and the polytonal effects so characteristic of Villa-Lobos. Even so, the refined subtlety of Hamelin’s playing is best demonstrated in the miniature musical portraits of As Três Marias (The Three Marys) and the first two series of A Prole do Bebê (Baby’s Family), which provide a complete contrast with the wild Rudepoêma. In a manner reminiscent of Schumann in Kinderszenen, Villa-Lobos looks at the child’s world from the viewpoint of a tender adult, sketching telling portraits. Hamelin often takes on long works, but he excels in these sparkling miniatures. Once again he displays outstanding maturity and musicality. Marc-André Hamelin aborde cette fois la musique du compositeur brésilien Villa-Lobos, auteur d’environ 200 opus pour piano. Sur ce disque, le pianiste aux doigts plus vifs que l’éclair (la vitesse de son Polichinelle s’avère totalement vertigineuse) mêle rudesse et poésie. Le Rudepoêma, ¦uvre maîtresse de Villa-Lobos, une des plus difficiles jamais écrites malgré son pianisme inhérent, reçoit ici un traitement fouillé qui permet à l’auditeur de saisir les influences primitives (qui rappellent par moment Le Sacre du printemps) et les caractéristiques polytonales qu’affectionne le compositeur.
Pourtant, ce sont dans les miniatures des Trois Maries et des deux suites de La famille du bébé, en contraste total avec le côté sauvage du Rudepoêma, que Marc-André Hamelin démontre le mieux le raffinement de son jeu. Un peu comme le Schumann des Kinderszenen, Villa-Lobos pose un regard adulte mais ému sur le monde de l’enfance, en brossant des tableaux saisissants. Hamelin, qu’on associe souvent aux ¦uvres de longue haleine, excelle dans ces miniatures qui scintillent sous ses doigts habiles. Le pianiste démontre une fois de plus une maturité et une musicalité exceptionnelles. Les notes de programme de Robert Matthew-Walker (en anglais, en français et en allemand), très appronfondies, analysent avec justesse le répertoire abordé.
