Jonathan CrowThis season marks the first edition of the Toronto Summer Music Festival with TSO Concertmaster Jonathan Crow at the helm as Artistic Director. The festival, which runs over three weeks from July 13 to August 5, features some of the best music and musicians this country has to offer.

The opening concert on July 13 at 7:30PM, Koerner Hall, has the St. Lawrence String Quartet in a program of Haydn, Beethoven, and R. Murray Schafer. This is followed by violinist Martin Beaver and friends (July 14) and James Ehnes in a solo violin recital of Bach, Ysaÿe, and the world premiere of Barrie Cabena’s Sonatina No. 4 for violin solo, Op. 375 “In Homage to J.S. Bach” (17). Soprano Soile Isokoski appears with Martin Katz in an art song recital on July 18 while on July 20, the Mark Fewer Jazz Trio of violinist Mark Fewer, pianist David Braid, and bassist Joseph Phillips will play some classics by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn and some less-familiar tunes by Canadians Jan Jarcyzk, Jodi Proznick and Phil Dwyer.

On July 24, 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition winners the Rolston Quartet will perform Zosha Di Castri’s Quartet No. 1, the compulsory work for the 2016 BISQC, along with Beethoven and Ravel (read a profile and interview with their mentors). The National Youth Orchestra of Canada under Jonathan Darlington stops by Koerner Hall on July 25 for a showing of their multi-disciplinary performance, The Unsilent Project (read more about this project). Other performances not-to-be-missed include the Dvořák Piano Trio with an Eastern-European program (July 26); Jonathan Crow and Philip Chiu with Debussy, Ravel, Elgar, and Healey Willan (July 31); a tribute concert to Canadian pianist Anton Kuerti featuring pianist Jane Coop, mezzo-soprano Laura Pudwell, violinist Barry Shiffman, violist Douglas McNabney, and cellist Joseph Johnson (August 3); and A Night at the Opera (July 27) with CBC Radio 2 host mezzo-soprano Julie Nesrallah along with Roger Honeywell, Danika Lorèn, Gary Relyea, Robert Kortgaard, and Nikki Chooi – who was recently appointed Concertmaster of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. You should keep your eyes peeled for several reGENERATION concerts by chamber music and art song fellows throughout the festival.
