Orford Music is always delighted to make way for young, aspiring musicians, and is pleased to welcome pianist Poom Prommachart, winner of the 2020 Orford Music Award, and violinist Abby Walsh, third place winner and recipient of the Coup de cœurPublic Choice Award at the same competition. Prepare to be dazzled by their impressive virtuosity and brilliant performances!

Abby Walsh
A rising star on the Québec arts scene, violinist Abby Walsh has a remarkably rich tone and innate artistic skills. Throughout her musical career, she has consistently scored top honours, graduating from the Conservatoire de musique with the highest distinction under Johanne Arel. Abby is currently studying at Rice University, in Texas, under Paul Kantor.

Abby Walsh was grand prize winner of the Concours de musique Classique de Pierre-de-Saurel in 2018, and the Festival-Concours de musique de Sherbrooke in 2015, adding to a growing collection of prizes and awards. She made her debut at the Place des Arts in spring 2018, and gave her first solo recital as part of Pro Musica’s Mélodînes series. The young musician was also a soloist with the Orchestre symphonique du Conservatoire and I Musici, performing the Korngold Concerto at the Maison symphonique.

Abby plays on a Joseph Guarneri Filius Andrea (1705) violin and uses a Eugène Sartory bow, generously on loan from Canimex.

Poom Prommachart
Steinway Artist Poom Prommachart from Thailand has established himself as one of the most prominent and promising artists of his generation for his impeccable physical demonstration, sincerity as well as the extreme lyricism with philosophical insights.

Mr. Prommachart studied has completed his bachelor of Music degree, Master of Music degree and Artist Diploma at the Royal College of Music, London (RCM) in 2014 on full scholarship, sponsored by H.R.H Princess Galyani Vadhana of Thailand and the RCM. During his time in London, he won the most prestigious Tagore Gold Medal which was presented by His Royal Highness the prince of Wales upon graduation. Currently, Mr. Prommachart is based in Montréal , Canada for pursuing his Doctorate of Music under the tutelage of Dang Thai Son and Jean Saulnier at the Université de Montréal, Canada. 

Mr. Prommachart’s performances are highly considered for their lyrical intensity and virtuosity. He has already developed an international reputation of carrying rare expressive depth, and has been acclaimed by critics who praised him as “a young Ashkenazy” from Seen and Heard UK Concert Review after his performance of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 2 in G Minor with London Musician Symphony Orchestra in 2010. Mr. Prommachart has recently won first prize at 2020 Orford Music Award.
