Music Niagara proudly presents internationally acclaimed violinist Solomiya Ivakhiv in a powerful recital celebrating the rich musical heritage of Ukraine and its connections with the wider European classical tradition.
Praised for her “crystal clear and noble sound” (Culture and Life, Ukraine) and her “distinctive charm and subtle profundity” (Daily Freeman, New York), Ivakhiv has established herself as an outstanding soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and champion of new music. She has performed in renowned venues including Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall, CBC Glenn Gould Studio, Concertgebouw Mirror Hall, and the Colonnaded Hall in Kyiv, and has appeared with orchestras such as the Istanbul State Symphony, Charleston Symphony, and the National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine.
This special recital highlights the music of Fedir Yakymenko, whose work bridges Ukrainian lyricism and the impressionist sound world of Paris. After fleeing the Bolshevik revolution, Yakymenko settled in France and moved within the artistic circles of Debussy and Ravel. In recognition of his important legacy, this year has been declared the Year of Yakymenko in Ukraine.
Joining Ivakhiv will be Canadian pianist Susan Son, who trained at the Curtis Institute of Music. Together, they will explore the fascinating musical dialogue between Ukrainian and French traditions through works that combine virtuosity, lyricism, and rich colour.
In addition to her international performing career, Solomiya Ivakhiv is Professor of Violin and Viola and Head of Strings at the University of Connecticut, Professor of Violin at the Longy School of Music of Bard College, Artistic Director of Music at the Institute (MATI) at the Ukrainian Institute of America in New York, and Artistic Director of the Caspian Music Festival in Vermont.
An inspiring afternoon of violin artistry and musical discovery—live with Music Niagara.
