Passion Play (2023) is a choral-orchestral cantata on the narrative attributed to St. John (written c. 95 AD), and with a libretto based thereupon by Matthew Larkin (also featuring prosaic writing and poetry by Anna Akhmatova, John Donne, Phineas Fletcher, George Herbert, and others). The work follows three distinct traditions: the Chester Mystery Plays of 15th century England (these were pieces of theatre which dramatised certain events in the Christian calendar, banned for several centuries due to accusations of “Popery”); the Oberammergau Passion Plays (offered every ten years in Bavaria since 1633); and the Passion Oratorio (chiefly popularized by German masters Buxtehude and Bach in the 17th and 18th centuries). The work was composed in winter 2023 and performed twice that year by Caelis Academy Ensemble, to whom it is dedicated. Combining choral and orchestral texture with art song, Caelis will offer a concert reading of the revised score.
