In the years between 1811 and 1816, Beethoven wrote the song cycle An die ferne Geliebte and a set of letters dedicated to a “distant” and “immortal” beloved. In 2012, Canadian composer James Wright set these letters to music for trio and voice entitled Briefe an die unsterbliche Geliebte. Gryphon Trio and the “powerful, free, and magnificently timbred” baritone David Pike (Luxemburger Wort) perform these poignant and passionate pieces, along with Gerald Finzi’s setting of Shakespearean songs entitled Let Us Garlands Bring.
