A evening where the Université de Montréal Big Band will put its best foot forward and shine in the company of the Orchestre national de jazz de Montréal, now invited as ensemble a residence of the music faculty
Each ensemble will premiere one of the two winning works of the first annual run of the Sophie Desmarais International large ensemble jazz competition. Also on the bill will be arrangements of students enrolled in the composition class of Jean-Nicolas Trottier.
The ONJ will also play the famous Black, Brown and Beige Suite of Duke Ellington, a watershed piece in jazz history that sought to elaborate an extended form jazz work aimed at bridging the gap between the classical and popular music genres, without sacrificing the specificities of its African-American heritage.
