Hudson Village Theatre is proud to present the Quebec premiere of The Rules of Playing Risk by acclaimed Canadian playwright Kristen Da Silva (Hurry Hard, Where You Are), running July 8–19, 2026. Produced and directed by Trevor Barrette, following his hit production of Bed and Breakfast last summer at HVT, this heartfelt and humorous intergenerational comedy explores family, forgiveness, and the courage it takes to reconnect across generations.
Recovering from an accident in his secluded Parry Sound home, unsociable retiree Garfield Lyons is forced out of isolation when his estranged fourteen-year-old grandson, Brandon, needs a place to serve his house arrest. With encouragement from his outspoken nurse Maggie, Garfield reluctantly agrees, sending grandfather and grandson on a fraught journey through old wounds, the divide between fathers and sons and grandparents and grandchildren, and the fragile possibility of rebuilding family.
Featuring an intergenerational cast of returning Hudson Village Theatre performers Matt Holland (Wife Begins at Forty), Anne-Marie Saheb (Strawberries in January), and Ryan Hill (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs), the production brings together familiar faces for a moving and entertaining story about connection, vulnerability, and hope.
“For anyone who has ever felt alone but still held onto hope, The Rules of Playing Risk offers a reminder that it’s never too late to reconnect,” says director Trevor Barrette. “Kristen Da Silva has written a funny and deeply compassionate play about the risks we take to build relationships. Beneath the laughter is a story about vulnerability, forgiveness, and the courage it takes to let people back into our lives.”
Praised for its “smart, sharp dialogue that is rich and just zings” and described as “a heartfelt, hilarious, smart, thoughtful play” by The Slotkin Letter, The Rules of Playing Risk balances laugh-out-loud humour with an honest exploration of loneliness, reconciliation, and the unexpected bonds that can emerge when people take a chance on one another.
The production features designs by META Award recipients Sabrina Miller (Production Design) and Tim Rodrigues (Lighting Design). The creative team also includes Lia Wright (Stage Manager), Leah Toledano (Production Assistant), and Mai Da Silva (Assistant Director).
