A creative approach to folk music.

The quintet Morgonrode mixes traditional folk music with improvised music and took its band name from an older spelling of “morgonraude”, meaning “the red sky at sunrise”.

The group was formed in 2015 by the three fiddle and Hardanger fiddle players Helga Myhr from Hallingdal, Selma French Bolstad from Follo and Rasmus Kjorstad from Gudbrandsdalen, who all studied at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. A year later, double bassist Fredrik Luhr Dietrichson from Haugesund and drummer Andreas Skår Winther from Ålesund, who both studied jazz at NTNU in Trondheim, also joined the team.

The group’s self-titled debut album was released in 2019, which next year won the Spellemann Prize in the category folk music / traditional music. The sequel, Du milde verden, was released in 2020. At the Bergen International Festival, you can expect traditional melodies interwoven with the group’s own lyrics, old knight ballads in new costume, and compositions that fuse with improvisational segments coloured by the group’s varied musical background.
