One of the most exciting things the founding figures of Bourgie Hall—Bernard Lamarre, former chairman of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and Pierre Bourgie, a Quebec benefactor and art collector—conceived of was the novel idea of a concert hall in a museum. Since its inauguration in September 2011, Bourgie Hall has become a home for early music in Canada. Space, Sound & Instruments In 2008, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts obtained possession of the Erskine and American United Church across the street. “At the time, there was a need in Montreal to have a hall for Baroque music,…

The ancient Chinese proverb—“Give a man a fish and you can feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you can feed him for a lifetime”—is also true for music. For Frédéric Lambert, viola/violin professor at Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and assistant viola professor at McGill University, viola teaching is all about fostering musical independence. “Your future teacher is you,” he says. Lambert’s approach to teaching is modelled after his own mentor, André Roy, whom he studied with at McGill University for 10 years. From his bachelor’s through to his doctorate, Roy always made sure…

At the Notre-Dame-De-Bon-Secours chapel, the ensemble will perform a program of medieval chant in various musical settings. “This is a huge and varied repertoire,” says Artistic Director Rebecca Bain, “of which we are picking specific pieces that are found in the sources (manuscripts and fragments) of McGill’s collection. Excellence, beauty and discovery. These are the keywords used by Bourgie Hall to present its new concert season. If there’s one event that brings them all together, it’s the launch of their traversal of the complete catalogue of Schubert’s Lieder. Bourgie Hall’s presentation of the complete cantatas of Johann Sebastian Bach had only scarcely been completed when artistic director Olivier Godin was already thinking of another project on a similarly grand scale. There are no fewer than 600 songs born of Schubert’s genius. “It’s a very rich body of works,” he says, “and yet the public hears perhaps 20 per…

George Gershwin was born on September 26, 1898; it was only fitting that his most beloved piece Rhapsody in Blue, written 100 years ago, would be celebrated in Montreal on what would have been his 126th birthday. In a night of romance and American jazz, Montérégie’s very own Jean-Philippe Sylvestre filled Maison Symphonique on Sept. 26h for a solo piano concert that also included Frédéric Chopin’s Nocturnes and Leonard Bernstein’s “Symphonic Dances” from West Side Story. Sylvestre has won many awards worldwide, the First Prize and Audience Prize from the OSM Competition, the esteemed Virginia Parker Prize, and the John…
