Welcome to the November/December/January national issue of La Scena Musicale, which features our annual special on Higher Education. This is also a special issue on Early Music and Baroque, a focus we began with our November 2018 issue dedicated to this fascinating period.
Our French cover features harpsichordist, singer and dancer Dorothéa Ventura, the newly-minted artistic director of Montreal’s Les Idées heureuses, taking over from retired founding director Geneviève Soly who is also profiled. From the West Coast, our English cover artist is soprano Suzie LeBlanc, who heads up Early Music Vancouver. Our themed issue also shines a light on Bourgie Hall’s special place within Montreal’s Early Music milieu; Mathieu Lussier of Ensemble Arion; Rebecca Bain of Ensemble Scholastica; Francis Colpron of Les Boréades; Baroque dance specialist Marie-Nathalie Lacoursière; and Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal. We also feature our Early Music and Baroque Guide.
A profile of Calgary’s Jenny Belzberg inaugurates our new column on philanthropists. We celebrate Vancouver Recital Society Founder Leila Getz on VRS’s 30th anniversary, as well as Les Violons du Roy on their 40th.
What better way to celebrate the centenary of Italian composer Giacomo Puccini than to look at his music. Our team of opera experts reveal La Scena’s top five Puccini arias.
We continue to support choral music with our regular two-page choral section; in this issue we look at holiday concerts with Tafelmusik and Pro Coro Canada, and offer our choral calendar of holiday concerts.
Our events calendar lists a wide variety of performances. As always, we offer reviews of interesting recordings and concerts.
In October, we welcomed interns Mohsen El-Hage, Heather Weinreb, and Kristen Whittle in our website and editorial department. And we still have an opening for a full-time internship in the winter semester.
SUBSCRIPTION AND DONATION DRIVE
The 2024-25 season continues the all-colour format the magazine adopted in November 2017. All six issues will be national issues, with separate English and French editions, which asserts our position as the largest bilingual arts media in Canada. We may also publish special issues during the year for our paying subscribers. Additionally, we will continue to offer personalized serenades for both Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. Please visit myscena.org/serenades in January for the roster of our 15th Singing Valentines.
La Scena Musicale has evolved with changing consumer habits in media consumption, while also maintaining its core mission: to promote music and the arts. Our print magazine will continue to provide quality curated articles and interviews in both English and French, while our website focuses on news and events.
As we look ahead in the 2024-25 season, we aim to increase both digital and print content. As this issue demonstrates, we have many talented writers and we wish to give space to their voices. Frequent increases in the price of magazine paper, however, are cause for concern. We hope you will consider supporting our magazine through a donation and/or by joining our fundraising committee by contacting us at [email protected].
Another way to support the magazine is through the LSM Boutique at mySCENA.org, where greeting cards and tickets to our partners’ events are available for purchase. We are also reviving our Discovery Box, which was suspended during COVID.
As a result of the pandemic, we have changed from street distribution to home delivery. We invite our readers to purchase subscriptions so as to ensure they continue to receive all of our annual issues. Subscriptions can also be purchased for others, and make an ideal gift for students, parents or artists.
As always, La Scena Musicale maintains a vigorous presence on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. The website offers new resources almost daily. The live performing arts are back, and La Scena Musicale is here to support them.
Wishing a musical and artistic holiday season to all!
