Welcome to the 2024 Summer national issue of La Scena Musicale, our final national issue of the year, in this our 28th season (2023-24) of publishing.

CURRENT ISSUE

La Scena Musicale’s 28th annual Summer Festival Guide is again glossy, all-colour and in the bigger three-column format. With over 450 festivals, this is Canada’s largest directory of summer arts and music festivals—classical music, jazz, world, folk, country, pop and rock music, theatre, dance, film, visual arts and competitions.

This summer issue comes in separate English and French editions with a combined print run of 68,000 copies and is distributed nationally, including in Vancouver and Edmonton/Calgary.

The issue features international names on both the English and French covers. Mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, who will present recitals at the Lanaudière Festival, is our French cover artist, while early-music specialist and director of Les Arts Florissants, William Christie, represents his Jardins des Voix on our English cover. Their production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen is coming to Toronto and Montreal this summer.

We sit down with composer and cellist Cris Derksen; Toronto Summer Music’s Artistic Director Jonathan Crow; Ottawa Chamberfest’s Artistic Director Carissa Klopoushak; and we highlight upcoming Indigenous theatre productions.

Choir Guide 2024

While we usually run our Choir Guide in the September issue of La Scena, this year’s can be found in the summer issue. This change was made in the hope of providing potential singers with the information they need to seek out and join a choir in advance of next season. Along with the choir guide, we have a special feature on the recent 2024 Podium Choral Conference, and a reflection on the joys of singing in choirs.

National Calendar

As in previous issues, we present a national print calendar, containing 550 concert listings from coast to coast to coast. Owing to space limitations, all listings are in summary form. We invite readers to consult our website—www.mySCENA.org—for complete details in both English and French.

SUBSCRIPTION AND DONATION DRIVE

La Scena Musicale has evolved with changing consumer habits in media consumption, while also maintaining its core mission: to promote music and the arts. Our print magazine will continue to provide quality curated articles and interviews in both English and French, while our website will focus on news and events.

As we look ahead to the 2024-25 season, we aim to increase both digital and print content. As this issue demonstrates, we have many talented writers and we wish to give space for their voices. Frequent increases in the price of magazine paper, however, are cause for concern. We hope you will consider supporting our magazine through a donation and/or by joining our fundraising committee by contacting us at [email protected].

Another way to support the magazine is through the LSM Boutique at mySCENA.org, where greeting cards and tickets to our partners’ events are available for purchase. We are also reviving our Discovery Box, which was suspended during COVID.

As a result of the pandemic, we have changed from street distribution to home delivery. We invite our readers to purchase subscriptions so as to ensure they continue to receive all of our annual issues. Subscriptions can also be purchased for others, and make an ideal gift for parents or artists.

As always, La Scena Musicale maintains a vigorous presence on Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter) and LinkedIn. The website offers new resources almost daily. The live performing arts are back, and La Scena Musicale is here to support them.

We wish you a happy and artistic summer!
