Welcome to the April/May 2025 national issue of La Scena Musicale, which features our annual guides to Canadian Spring and International Festivals. This is also a special issue on Voice and Hearing. Our French cover features American baritone Thomas Hampson, who performs in Quebec City and Montreal; Venezuelan male soprano Samuel Mariño graces our English cover.

One of this issue’s themes deals with voices, anchored by the upcoming Concours musical international de Montréal which this year is dedicated to singing. Read our experts’ predictions as to who will be on the podium, as well as the major changes for the competition in 2025. Other highlights include encounters with mezzo-soprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux, soprano Midori Marsh and opera director François Racine. Also in the spotlight are Festival Classica, Opéra de Trois-Rivières, as well as our update on Canada’s indie opera scene.

Closely related is the theme of vocal and hearing health. Contributions from some of the finest Canadian experts in audiology and speech-language pathology provide insights into challenges faced by musicians and music lovers alike. Highlights consist of surgeons Dr. Françoise Chagnon and Dr. Andrée-Anne Leclerc, audiologist Sherri Zelazny, researchers Marshall Chasin and Michelle Yeung, and professors Sylvie Hébert and Andréanne Sharp. Speech-Language and Audiology Canada provides an overview of these professions.

We also feature our Opera and Vocal Guide and a Hearing Guide.

CELEBRATION OF LOVE

In February, we organized our 15th Annual Singing Valentines Campaign with the aim of sharing the joy of personalized serenades. This year, we distributed over 50 free Singing Valentines to seniors, as well as a number of paid serenades. We would like to thank our subscribers, the La Scena team, and all of our participating singers/musicians for making this year’s Singing Valentines such a great success.

La Scena Radio

We are bringing back La Scena Radio by streaming recordings reviewed in the last two issues, as well as other newly released albums. We also hope to launch a mobile app to make it easier for you to listen on your phone. Visit myscena.org/radio.

SUBSCRIPTION AND DONATION DRIVE

The 2024-25 season continues the all-colour format the magazine adopted in November 2017. All six issues will be national issues, with separate English and French editions, which asserts our position as the largest bilingual arts media in Canada. We may also publish special issues during the year for our paying subscribers.

La Scena Musicale has evolved with changing consumer habits in media consumption, while also maintaining its core mission: to promote music and the arts. Our print magazine will continue to provide quality curated articles and interviews in both English and French, while our website focuses on news and events.

As we look ahead in the 2024-25 season, we aim to increase both digital and print content. As this issue demonstrates, we have many talented writers and we wish to give space to their voices. Frequent increases in the price of magazine paper, however, are cause for concern. We hope you will consider supporting our magazine through a donation and/or by joining our fundraising committee by contacting us at [email protected].

Another way to support the magazine is through the LSM Boutique at mySCENA.org, where greeting cards and tickets to our partners’ events are available for purchase. We are also reviving our Discovery Box, which was suspended during COVID.

As a result of the pandemic, we have changed from street distribution to home delivery. We invite our readers to purchase subscriptions so as to ensure they continue to receive all of our annual issues. Subscriptions can also be purchased for others, and make an ideal gift for students, parents or artists.

As always, La Scena Musicale maintains a vigorous presence on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and LinkedIn. The website offers new resources almost daily. The live performing arts are back, and La Scena Musicale is here to support them.

Wishing a musical and artistic spring to all!
