Schubert: Architect
Mathieu Gaudet, piano
Analekta, 2023

Architect features Schubert’s Sonata in B major B. 575, the 2 Scherzi and Trio D. 593 and the Sonata in C minor D. 958. Gaudet continues to interpret Schubert masterfully—balancing lyricism and warmth with measure and sobriety. Sonata No. 9 D. 575, published posthumously, is interpreted in all four movements with vivid contrasts in sound and character. The Scherzo and the Allegro are exemplary in brilliance as well as composure, while the Andante is almost moving in intimacy and sweetness.

These contrasts are also present in the 2 Scherzi. The first, reminiscent of Mozart, is interpreted with lightness and spirit; while the second, more proudly Schumannian, is played intensely and heartfeltly. The CD closes with the Sonata in C minor D. 958, one of Schubert’s most important works for size, shape and expressiveness. The initial Allegro gives a glimpse of the remarkable emotional depth that characterizes the piece. Gaudet plays it sensitively, and the initial chords possess the drama and intensity that will lead the rest of the piece, especially the last movement. The pianist also pays special attention to the Adagio, a moment of emotional relaxation within a work of this magnitude. The Minuet gently brings the listener back to a more turbulent atmosphere, which characterizes the fourth movement. This, an Allegro, is marked by dynamism and inner motion, which Gaudet interprets successfully. Gaudet’s Schubertian adventure thus continues, in the name of taste, sobriety and intimate expressiveness, with this great album.
