After its exciting season debut, the Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) invites all to its 2nd concert paying tribute to John Rea, featuring Toronto’s Continuum Contemporary Music. Le diable dans le beffroi will be presented at the Salle Bourgie, Saturday, December 5 at 7 pm.
On the program: two of Rea’s works, revealing two antagonistic sides of the honored composer. On the one hand the prelude is highly expressive Reception and Offering Music – a work in which a large and powerful drum beating to the rhythm of the Native American Pow Wow joins in with wind instruments. On the other hand, Études multiples will enable the audience to discover John Rea’s more rational side.
The evening, featuring works for wind quintet, will bring the audience an appreciation for original tonalities which inspired the greatest composers.
A concert filled with contrasts placing you alongside SMCQ Artistic Director Walter Boudreau, once again illustrating his iconoclastic side. Before taking to the skies with the very moving piece Adieu de Stockhausen, an emotive work verging on German Romanticism.
Ultimately, a perfectly balanced evening.
