Toronto – Sinfonia Toronto will conclude its 23rd season main series concerts on Saturday, May 7 with SCHUBERT & SHOSTAKOVICH. Nurhan Arman will conduct the hybrid concert available for in-person attendance at George Weston Recital Hall as well as online.

Commenting on the program, Maestro Arman said “the two composers in the title of the concert are represented with works significant in their careers. Both composers wrote these works in the spring and they have a spring-like flavour. Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony Opus 49a is an orchestration of his first string quartet, a bright and forward-looking  work. The orchestral version of Schubert’s G Minor string quartet has all the charm and elegance of springtime Vienna. I am also excited about the three other works on the program. Puccini’s Three Minuets are irresistible gems, among his very few non-operatic works, and Rachmaninoff’s famous Vocalise is one of his most memorable melodies. And very special work in this program is the talented Toronto composer Saman Shahi’s Suspended Doorways.”

Sinfonia Toronto, now in its 23rd season, has toured twice in Europe, in the US, South America and China, receiving glowing reviews. It has released four CD’s, including a JUNO Award winner, and performs in many Ontario cities. Its extensive repertoire includes all the major string orchestra works of the 18th through 21st centuries, and it has premiered many new works. Under the baton of Nurhan Arman the orchestra’s performances present outstanding international guest artists and prominent Canadian musicians.

Maestro Nurhan Arman has conducted throughout Europe, Asia, South America, Canada and the US, returning regularly to many orchestras in Europe. Among the orchestras Maestro Arman has conducted are the Moscow Philharmonic, Deutsches Kammerorchester Frankfurt, Filarmonica Italiana, St. Petersburg State Hermitage Orchestra, Orchestre Regional d’Ile de France, Hungarian Symphony, Arpeggione Kammerorchester, Milano Classica and Belgrade Philharmonic.
