Montreal, October 2, 2023 – Do you ever wonder why some music gives you a chill up your spine? Why you like certain types of music and not others?

On Oct. 16, 2023, The Neuro (Montreal Neurological Institute-Hospital) is hosting a unique event bringing together the worlds of music and neuroscience.

“Your Brain on Music” will be an evening of discussion and musical performance with musicians from the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and leading neuroscientists Robert Zatorre and Simone Dalla Bella. Accompanied by an OSM string quartet made up of Olivier Thouin, violon, Ariane Lajoie, violon, Sofia Gentile, alto, and Sylvain Murray, violoncelle, the scientists will discuss the latest research into music’s impact on the brain while hearing Schubert’s Quartettsatz, D. 703 and Beethoven’s Quatuor op. 18 no. 4 (movements 3 & 4).

Zatorre, a researcher at The Neuro, has spent his life studying our emotional response to music and the impact of musical practice on brain plasticity. His lab makes use of functional and structural brain imaging technologies, together with cognitive and psychophysical measures.

Dalla Bella, a professor at the Université de Montréal and co-director of BRAMS (International Laboratory for Brain, Music and Sound Research), is an expert in the perception of rhythm in music and its clinical applications in neurodegenerative and developmental diseases. He uses behavioural methods, movement capture, EEG and exploits new mobile technologies for testing and training.

Michel Rochon, a science journalist and author of several books on the brain, will host the evening. He is also active on the musical scene as a pianist. His show, Le piano à paroles, has now become a book (Le cerveau et la musique) published by Editions MultiuMondes.
