Montréal, Thursday, March 23, 2023 — Temps Fort presents Canevas: Futur Symphonique, an immersive orchestra experience that openly defies the traditional form of the symphony concert. The event will be held on April 6, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. at Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal.
During the concert, the orchestra and the public will share the same space. Breaking the fourth wall and abandoning the conventions of orchestra performances, the audience will be invited to wander amid 34 classical musicians as they play their instruments. Surrounding them, four large screens will broadcast images generated by the music in real time. In this way, Canevas will offer a new and enriched orchestra experience.
The musical repertoire will be a crescendo of selections. The concert will begin with Frates, a contemplative, meditative piece for string orchestra and percussion by Estonian composer Arvo Pärt. The ensemble will then perform The Hebrides, a nostalgic piece by German composer Felix Mendelssohn. Finally, the show will close with the famous Symphony No. 7 by German composer Ludwig van Beethoven.
This ambitious project federates a multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of visual art and sound, which has developed a portfolio of productions that have resonated both in Quebec and internationally. The artistic and musical director is Pascal Germain-Berardi, who is also founder and artistic director of Temps Fort. Samuel Greffe (Les Brigands) has agreed to go off the beaten track in tackling the creative direction. The colourful, textured world of the projections was designed by Hugues Kir Caillères, based on a concept developed by the visual director, Sébastien Johnson. Jean-Philippe Jullin provides the sound analysis by determining which instruments should take precedence at every given moment to allow a visual translation that is faithful to the complex musical constructions played by the orchestra. Philippe Marquis is the technical director of this ambitious project, and Pauline Boisbouvier has handled production from the development phase.
Canevas arose from the work of these multidisciplinary artists and 34 talented musicians united by a passion for music and a desire to overturn conventions. Conceived and designed with the aim of creating an immersive environment, the visual and sound environment offers to renew the classical orchestra experience. Canevas: Futur Symphonique offers a new perspective on classical music and will break the rules of symphony concerts that separate the orchestra from the audience. In doing so, Canevas aims to create a genuine dialogue between musicians and spectators while asking the question, “What is an orchestra concert in the 21st century?”
