Montreal, September 1, 2022 – The Société de musique contemporaine du Québec (SMCQ) presents a participatory event in September and the return of its Montreal/New Musics Festival (MNM) in person. The new season will herald the gradual change of artistic direction, from the era of Maestro Walter Boudreau to that of Ana Sokolovic, who is succeeding him.
On stage … with the SMCQ!
For its opening event, the SMCQ invites the public to share the stage with the artists! This afternoon of discovery will allow young and old alike to meet composers and musicians, while participating in musical improvisation and choral singing workshops.
Katia Makdissi-Warren
In the first workshop, composer Katia Makdissi-Warren, accompanied by Michel Dubeau and Bertil Schulrabe, provides the opportunity to join their collective musical improvisations. Participants will enter the ranks of the Oktoecho-Relève ensemble for an exploration leading to the creation of a soundtrack for the tale “Maélie et le dragon”. The work will be recorded on site and later broadcast on the SMCQ’s new interactive application.
Led by conductor Tiphaine Legrand, the second workshop will feature excerpts from the collection “Chantons nos compositeurs” (“Sing the works of our composers!”). Participants will join the “Chœur des jeunes de la faculté de musique de l‘Université de Montréal” to sing Ana Sokolovic’s rhythmic Viva la musica!, Denis Gougeon’s delightful Chanson de Maélie, and the canons L‘écureuil roux, Le lynx, Le hibou ou L‘ours blanc from François-Hugues Leclair’s magnificent Chant boréal. This is also an opportunity for participants to meet the composers and receive an autographed score.

MNM/Montreal New Musics festival: Music and Spirituality
The 11th edition of the Montreal/New Musics Festival will have the theme of Music and Spirituality. Artists from the Montreal scene and international guests will gather around a daring musical program inviting the public to “commune” for 10 days! From solo to symphony orchestra, chamber music and other installations, some twenty concerts will punctuate the festival, while youth activities and a symposium will round out the program.
February 23 to March 5, 2023.
