Montreal, October 26, 2023 – The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM) and the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec (CMADQ) wish to announce their partnership in a special project involving OSM Music Director Rafael Payare. A formal announcement was issued yesterday evening at the Maison symphonique, with guests of honour and members of the Boards of Directors of the OSM and the CMADQ in attendance.

This new partnership, along with various other well-established collaborations and in keeping with its educational mission, enables the OSM to reach out to music lovers across Quebec through activities hosted each year by a different music conservatory. These activities will involve, for example, OSM instrumentalists to work with sectionals students, to play with the Orchestre symphonique des conservatoires, to present various chamber music concerts, and to give masterclasses at the host establishment.

“Music conservatories are vital: they provide training to tomorrow’s musical artists. Without them, music would not have a future, or its future would be severely compromised. My hope is that this partnership encourages us to build on past collaborations and stimulates innovative new ones. Music is essential for the heart and the mind, and its role in human wellness is fundamental. The fact that we can create by and through music is one of the miracles of life.” – Rafael Payare, Music Director of theOrchestre symphonique de Montréal

“The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal comprises several musicians who received their training in the Conservatoire system. It makes this partnership a natural nexus between our two organizations. The OSM and the Conservatoire were founded around the same time, and by the same entities. Let us not forget that Wilfrid Pelletier served as Music Director of the OSM just before establishing the Conservatoire in 1942. This Conductor Emeritus and visionary spurred the very foundation of these two key cultural institutions in Quebec.” – Marc Hervieux, Director General of the Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec

On June 2, 2023, the Conservatoire de musique de Val-d’Or will mark the beginning of this new partnership with a concert presented by the Orchestre symphonique des conservatoires conducted by Rafael Payare. The maestro will be joined by OSM musicians who once studied within Quebec’s Conservatoire system. A landmark event, this free concert will bring together the population of Val-d’Or and surrounding areas and at the same time highlight the institution’s 60th anniversary.

About Wilfrid Pelletier

The renowned founding conductor, who strove throughout his life to champion the art of music, cofounded the OSM in 1934. Nine years later, he established the first branch in Montreal of the present-day network of Quebec’s music and drama conservatories, aligning with the highest standards of excellence and principles of a secular and free education.

Grounded in the commitment to pursue an established collaboration, this partnership will serve to strengthen the close ties connecting these two Quebec institutions since their inception.
