Montreal, March 4, 2024 – On May 5, 1962 in Vienna, the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal conducted by Zubin Mehta gave its first concert abroad. Now in its 62nd year as a leading cultural ambassador for Montreal on the world stage, next November the OSM is set to embark on its 59th international tour, its 17th in Europe. This eight-concert tour will also be the OSM’s fourth one under Music Director Rafael Payare, following tours in South Korea, Europe, and the United States in 2022–2023.
“It is a tremendous privilege to be returning to Europe with the OSM and to spotlight our local culture on major European stages alongside virtuoso pianist Daniil Trifonov. With every tour, we bring our Montreal flair to the world’s most prestigious venues, and we are infinitely touched each time by their music lovers’ warm reception.” — Rafael Payare, Music Director of the OSM

On November 16, the musicians fly off to showcase the Orchestra with performances in London, Luxembourg, Paris, Hamburg, Berlin, Amsterdam, Munich, and Vienna. The program for this tour, which concludes on November 30, will feature Jeder Baum spricht by Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Richard Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony (Eine Alpensinfonie), and Schumann’s Piano Concerto.
To everyone’s great delight, the Orchestra will team up once again with pianist Daniil Trifonov, a devoted collaborator and frequent performer with the OSM (2015–2016–2019–2020–2022–2023). This will be his second tour with OSM musicians, following an acclaimed 2016 appearance in the United States. An outstanding pianist, winner of the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Solo Album and of the 1st Prize and Grand Prize at the prestigious Tchaikovsky Competition (2011), Trifonov is a regular guest of the world’s prominent orchestras. This tour will see him perform Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no. 1 and Schumann’s sole Piano Concerto.
You can hear all the music from this tour’s program at the Maison symphonique in the fall, 2024, as part of the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal’s 2024–2025 season.
