Warwick, March 28, 2024 – For his new project “Generation Quartet”, Yannick Rieu will be surrounded by 3 musicians among the most talented of their generation. This group will be made up of pianist Jonathan Cayer, double bassist Guy Boisvert and drummer André White. As its name suggests, the “Generation Quartet” project makes possible a dialogue between two generations of musicians who, over the years and shared experiences, have developed a particular chemistry, a sound of their own. One foot in the jazz tradition, the other in innovation, this group is characterized by the great cohesion of its members, who explore, dialogue and exchange together. In addition to unbridled spontaneity, collective energy is another great strength of this quartet. The music they share is imbued with poetry, mystery and beauty, evoking human and spiritual experience in all its aspects.
Yannick Rieu
Recognized as one of the most talented saxophonists on the world scene, 18th recipient of the Oscar Peterson Prize which highlights the quality of his art and his exceptional contribution to the development of Canadian jazz, Yannick Rieu is one of those musicians in constant evolution. The press around the world is full of praise for him. In 1988, Downbeat magazine (New York) placed him alongside saxophonists such as Brandford Marsalis and Joe Lovano during a “critics’ poll.”
Jonathan Cayer
A bachelor’s in jazz performance from McGill University, Jonathan Cayer studied piano with pianists as influential as James Gelfand, Jean Beaudet and Steve Amirault. Very active on the Montreal scene, he collaborates with artists such as Ian Kelly, Coral Egan, Madame Moustache. He wrote the music for several series such as Faits Divers, Patrick Sénécale presents, Une Affaire Criminelle and Avant le Crash.
Winner of the General Motors Grand Prix at the Montreal International Jazz Festival with the ODD ensemble, as well as the TD Grand Prix with Alexandre Côté’s quintet, Jonathan Cayer collaborates with several artists on the Montreal jazz scene: Tony Mastrul’s nonette , Lettingo by Gary Schwartz, recipient of a 2011 Opus prize for best show of the year, Jean-Nicolas Trottier Tentet, saxophonist Yannick Rieu, Odd lot by Jacques Kuba Séguin as well as the Annie Dominique Quintet.
Guy Boisvert
Double bassist Guy Boisvert, a graduate of McGill University in jazz interpretation, has worked with the François Bourassa Quartet since 1982. With 10 albums to their credit, the quartet was awarded the “Juno” for best album in 2001. jazz of the year for their recording at “Top at the Senator” in Toronto entitled “Live.” In 2004 the members of the group won another mention for their album, “Indefinite time”: the “Félix” for best jazz album, without forgetting the multiple “Opus” awards that they won.
With his group, Guy has travelled several countries and participated in several recognized jazz festivals, including the “North Sea Jazz Festival” in The Hague in the Netherlands. Accompanying recognized artists, he has played on several albums including those of Terez Montcalm, Yannick Rieu, François Richard, Sylvain Provost, Rémi Bolduc, Pierre Côté among others. He collaborated on a few soundtracks for cinema, including “Jack Paradise” and Michel Cusson’s soundtrack for the series “Omerta”.
Andrew White
André White is a pianist, drummer, educator and sound engineer active on the Canadian jazz scene for over forty years. He has performed with many Canadian and American jazz notables, including Benny Carter, Dizzy Gillespie, Pepper Adams, Jimmy Heath, Benny Golson, Steve Grossman, David Liebman, George Garzone, Junior Cook, Bob Berg, Bobby Watson, Cecil Payne, Sonny Greenwich, Pat LaBarbera, Sheila Jordan, Don Thompson, Kirk MacDonald, PJ Perry, Joe Sullivan, Kevin Dean, Al McLean, Reno De Stephano and many more.
He is an associate professor of jazz studies at the Schulich School of Music and continues to practise independently as a pianist and drummer.
