Calgary, AB (June 28, 2022) — The Honens International Piano Competition is pleased to announce Jan and Larry Fichtner as its 2022 Honens Honours recipients. Honens Honours pays tribute to individuals and organisations whose dedication to the arts, like Esther Honens, has made an extraordinary contribution to arts and culture in Calgary.
“Jan and Larry Fichtner are the true embodiment of the very purpose behind Honens Honours. Their generosity of time, resource, and spirit are both outstanding and inspiring on local, provincial, and national levels. We are absolutely delighted to be able to honour them in this way,” says Neil Edwards, Honens’ President & CEO.
“Our interest and involvement in the arts was spawned by our experience as host family to Jean-Efflam Bavouzet at the first Honens Competition in 1992. He drew us deeply into the appreciation and enjoyment of classical piano. We developed a deep friendship during that time—a friendship which is even stronger today. We have become like family. From there, our involvement in the business of the arts lead us to very strong relationships with many world class artists who bring endless joy to our lives,” comments Larry Fichtner.
Honens pays tribute to this year’s deserving honorees over dinner in Ross Glen Hall at Mount Royal University followed by a recital by Jeremy Denk, winner of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship and the Avery Fisher Prize at the Bella Concert Hall, Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts at Mount Royal University.
Past Honens Honourees are Jenny Belzberg CM AOE (2006), Irene Besse (2009), F. Richard Matthews CM QC (2012), Mary Rozsa de Coquet OC (2015), James Stanford OC (2015), and Heather Bourne and Masters Gallery Ltd. (2018). Proceeds support the 2022 Honens International Piano Competition and Honens’ outreach into the community.
