Montreal, April 19, 2022 — The OSM is thrilled to unveil its summer programming, a first under the Orchestra’s new Music Director Rafael Payare. This season features the 9th edition of the now familiar Classical Spree festival, whose theme this year is The Americas. The Orchestra will also present 16 outdoor chamber music concerts, large-scale Concerts in the Parks, as well as 3 concerts at the Festival de Lanaudière. In addition to these activities, Rafael Payare and the OSM will be back on tour: July brings them to South Korea for a series of concerts! Summer at the OSM has always been an opportunity to reach out, get closer to local communities and audiences and make music ever more accessible. This year is no exception: surprises, music-filled events, and encounters featuring OSM musicians and the Orchestra’s summer season Spokesperson, Magalie Lépine-Blondeau!
THE CLASSICAL SPREE KICKS OFF
Concert at the Esplanade at Olympic Park—August 10 at 7:30 p.m.
The Orchestra kicks off the Classical Spree with its ever-popular free concert on the Esplanade at Olympic Park. From Canada to Venezuela, Rafael Payare celebrates the richness of repertoire with artists from the Americas. The evening opens with the “New World” Symphony, moving through an Indigenous song, and West Side Story, and ending with pieces from Prévin et from Venezuelan Castellanos as well as with the Trumpet Concerto by Cuban composer Paquito D’Riveira. Author Natasha Kanapé Fontaine, singer Jeremy Dutcher, soprano Jeanine De Bique, and trumpeter Pacho Flores will join the Orchestra on this timeless adventure.
THE CLASSICAL SPREE: AUGUST 10 TO 14
The 9th edition of the OSM Classical Spree, under the theme of The Americas, will delight audiences with a music programming that comprises over 100 works. This summer rendezvous with the OSM is a dream opportunity to immerse oneself in the languages, music and cultures that have inhabited the vast territory of the Americas. In all, 24 original concerts will be held in four different performance spaces at Place des Arts, while the OSM welcomes ensembles as well as numerous local and international celebrated artists from the American continent: saxophonist Branford Marsalis, violinist James Ehnes, and pianists Sergio Tiempo and Bruce Liu (Montrealer)—winner of the 2012 OSM Competition and of the 2021 Chopin International Piano Competition.
The OSM’s rich offering at this summer event notably includes works by three leading Canadian composers: Jacques Hétu, Jean Coulthard and R. Murray Schafer. The music of Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla will also be featured in several concerts. Music lovers of all ages can also enjoy a range of free concerts, lectures, workshops, instrument demonstrations and virtual reality experiences.

TOUR OF SOUTH KOREA: A FIRST WITH RAFAEL PAYARE
Seoul, a city that has welcomed the OSM three times since 1989, will play host to Rafael Payare’s first tour with the Orchestra. Two guest soloists will joint them in Korea for the occasion: American violinist Hilary Hahn and Korean pianist Yekwon Sunwoo. Programs include Mahler’s Symphony no. 5, Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto no. 1 and Piano Concerto no. 3, as well as works by Ravel, Bartók and Debussy. Following its 2 concerts in Seoul, the OSM’s Korean tour will continue in Daegu and Tongyeong.
A NEW SUMMER SPOKESPERSON
The OSM is pleased to welcome Magalie Lépine-Blondeau, well-known to the Quebec public, as Spokesperson for the 2022 summer season. For her first collaboration with the Orchestra, the actress will host the Orchestra’s large-scale Concerts in the Parks as well as some of the concerts and events of the Classical Spree.
“I am overjoyed and honoured to be working with Maestro Rafael Payare for his first summer season. I invite the public to join me for an effervescent music-filled summer!”
– Magalie Lépine-Blondeau
SIRIUSXM OSM IN THE PARKS
Once again this year, the OSM will set up its tent in the parks of Greater Montreal for classical evenings open to everyone. Under the direction of Dina Gilbert and Adam Johnson, these concerts under the stars are free of charge and part of the OSM’s mission of accessibility. Music lovers will be able to enjoy unifying and inspiring repertoire by coming out on July 26 to Parc Poly-Aréna in Brossard and on August 19 to Parc Angrignon in Montreal (Le Sud-West borough).
3RD EDITION OF SUMMER IN THE CITY WITH THE OSM
In August, OSM musicians go out and meet their public in various neighbourhoods and parks for chamber music concerts right in the city. Sixteen concerts will be presented from August 24 to September 3. Details will soon be available on osm.ca.
OTHER SUMMER COLLABORATIONS
This year, the Festival de Lanaudière showcases the OSM in June and July for three concerts conducted by Rafael Payare. This summer also marks the return of La Sentinelle, an interactive, participatory installation that celebrates the unifying, evocative and universal character of music, with soundtracks performed by the OSM. Produced by La boîte interactive and mirari, the installation comes to life throughout the summer at the Espace public in the heart of the city of Mont-Tremblant, inviting passers- by to discover the living arts in an open-air performance venue magnified by the OSM’s symphonic universe.
