Montreal, November 22, 2023 – I Musici de Montréal board chair Guy Chouinard is pleased to announce the appointment of Étienne Lalonde as chief executive officer of the orchestra effective as of this week. Over the past five years, Étienne served as executive director of the Fondation du Conservatoire de musique et d’art dramatique du Québec. His thirteen years of experience in the non-profit sector includes key positions with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Dans la Rue. He earned his EMBA from the School of Management at the Université du Québec à Montréal and the Université Paris Dauphine.

Working in close collaboration with artistic director Jean-François Rivest, Étienne Lalonde’s mandate will be to ensure that I Musici continues to fulfill its mission and in the update of its 2024-2028 strategic plan. The plan is designed to enable the orchestra to become even more deeply rooted in the Montreal community while carrying out a program based on cultural outreach and audience development for enriching its musical offering and enhancing its presence on the national and international stage.

With this appointment, I Musici also announces a renewed governance strategy for the Orchestra and its Foundation. As of September 2023, these changes have been designed to ensure the long-term viability of the organization as it embarks on a new phase of development. To this end, the orchestra is delighted to welcome fifteen highly experienced directors to its newly revamped gender-parity board.

Guy Chouinard: An advisor in practice management at BMO Private Banking, a director since 2015, and the orchestra’s new board chair, treasurer, and chair of the audit and Vision 2024-2028 committees.

Christiane Vachon: Vice-president of legal affairs and secretary for the Ordre des CPA du Québec, a director since April 2023, new board vice-president, chair of the governance and human resources committees, and a member of the Vision 2024-2028 committee.

Claude Joli-Cœur: Lawyer, manager, corporate director, and former commissioner and chair of the National Film Board of Canada, a director since September 2023, new vice-president for grants and community organizations, and a member of the audit and Vision 2024-2028 committees.

Nicolas Pawlonka: EDC director of international trade and expert in infrastructure projects, a director since 2018, and now treasurer and chair of the audit committee.

Claudette Van Zyl: Lawyer with Norton Rose Fulbright, a director since April 2023, and now board secretary and a member of the governance and human resources committees.

David B. Sela: President of COPAP, a director since 2012, former board chair, and chair of the I Musici de Montréal Foundation.

Hélène Fotopulos: Strategy consultant, a director since 2015 and responsible for community relations.

Robert Dutton: Former RONA president and CEO, co-director of McGill HEC EMBA Montreal and HEC Montréal associate professor, a director since 2022 and an advisor in connection with HEC programs.

Marie-Michèle Demers: Quebec Theatre Council communications manager, a director since 2018, and responsible for the marketing and communications working group.

Christèle Jean-Paul: Plus Company leadership and development manager, a director since April 2023, and a member of the governance and human resources committees.

Bertrand Malsch: Associate professor at the Queen’s University Smith School of Business, a director since September 2023 and a member of the audit committee.

Daniel Béland: Director of the McGill Institute for the Study of Canada and James McGill Professor in political science, a director since September 2023, and a member of the marketing and communications working group.

Émilie Germain: Advisor, digital communications at the Mila-Quebec AI Institute, a director since April 2023, and a member of the marketing and communications working group.

Louise Mailhot: Counsel, Fasken Martineau, first woman appointed to the Quebec Court of Appeal in Montreal and NGO representative to the United Nations, a director since 2021 and a member of the governance and human resources committees.

Louise Vaillancourt: Consultant, a director since 2015, board chair from October 2019 to September 2023, and a member of the Vision 2024-2028 committee.

The orchestra’s artistic director and conductor Jean-François Rivest, the musicians, and the administrative team are all thrilled with the new development opportunities the board’s renewed governance structure will provide.
