APRIL 7, 2021 – CAMMAC has released a series of 6 short films entitles “Musical Postcards from the CAMMAC Music Centre”, featuring several luminaries of the Canadian musical landscape.

In the summer of 2020, CAMMAC’s Artistic Director, Guylaine Lemaire, commissioned Montreal composer, CAMMAC teacher and McGill Doctorate of Music candidate Kevin O’Neil to write a short piece for each of three ensembles selected from among CAMMAC’s teaching staff. The performances were filmed in October 2020 at the CAMMAC Music Centre on Lake MacDonald, in Harrington, Québec. Each ensemble performed the piece written for them by Mr. O’Neil, along with a second piece of their choice:

  • Flûte Alors! (recorder ensemble): Vincent Lauzer / Marie-Laurence Primeau / Alexa Raine-Wright / Caroline Tremblay – performing Quinta by Kevin O’Neil and Jesus Christus, unser Heiland by J. S. Bach
  • Duo Djokic-Leblanc: Marc Djokic, violin / Julien Leblanc, piano – performing (M)élodie no. 1 by Kevin O’Neil and Prelude no. 2 by George Gershwin (arr. Heifetz).
  • L’Harmonie des Saisons: Margaret Little, viola da gamba / Mélisande Corriveau, viola da gamba – performing Sarabande by Kevin O’Neil and Concert XLI: Le retour by Jean de Sainte-Colombe

Every summer, the CAMMAC Music Centre welcomes some of the finest Canadian musicians to teach and perform during CAMMAC’s Summer Music Programs as well as to perform in the Musical Sunday’s Festival.

In 2020, the CAMMAC Music Centre remained silent throughout what would normally have been a busy summer, filled with amateur and professional musicians coming together to play, to learn and to enjoy the beauty of the natural environment. It was very moving to have music resonate once again through the beautiful site at the Music Centre as we filmed; the musician’s emotions and passion for the music are visible throughout the performances.

Produced with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts’ Digital Originals Initiative, the project was created with the objective of developing, extending and innovating CAMMAC’s artistic practice by taking it to a new level. By allowing us to reach a much wider audience than would be possible with a live performance, this project also provides an excellent opportunity for CAMMAC to promote its music programs by featuring performances by our exceptional teaching staff. With new works being written for the project, we are proud to bring new artistic content of the highest calibre to people from across Canada and around the world.

To see the films and for additional information on the project, the collaborators and the story behind each of the pieces written by Mr. O’Neil, please see our website:
