Montreal, September 23rd, 2024 – In conjunction with the exhibition Vice, vertu, désir, folie – Trois siècles de chefs-d’œuvre flamands from the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Clavecin en concert will hold its first concert on October 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Salle Bourgie. Under Luc Beauséjour’s fingers, a multitude of diverse birds take flight from the harpsichord, owned by the Bourgie Hall, crafted by Keith Hill in the style of the Ruckers dynasty (significant Antwerp instrument makers of the 17th century whose instruments were long admired in France and throughout Europe). These bird portraits, penned by French masters, seek to evoke, with great wit, both their songs and the characteristics attributed to them by poetic tradition since time immemorial.
These portraits of birds, from the pen (!) of French masters, seek to evoke, with great wit, both their songs and the characters that poetic tradition has attributed to them since the dawn of time. “The evocative variety of colors created by Luc Beauséjour is one of the assets of this beautiful moment of escape”. (Christophe Huss, Le Devoir)
This first concert marks the 30th anniversary of Clavecin en concert.
30 years of Clavecin en concert
Luc Beauséjour’s desire to share a repertoire he loved inspired him to organize four harpsichord recitals a year in the small Saint-Louis chapel of Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Montreal in 1994. Since then, the rich harpsichord repertoire has been important in Clavecin en concert’s programming. Today, the organization offers the public harpsichord recitals, ensemble music, recordings, masterclasses, editions of unpublished Baroque works and, most recently, Clavecin en concert was a major partner in the Jurow International Harpsichord Competition (an American competition founded in 1982), held in Montreal for the first time in its history. Clavecin en concert also occasionally presents new works and works for harpsichord from the 20th and 21st centuries.
