On 11 April 2017, Kent Nagano, General Music Director of the Hamburg State Opera and Chief Conductor of the Philharmonic State Orchestra, together with GeorgesDelnon, director of the State Opera Hamburg, and John Neumeier, director of the Hamburg Ballet, announced their season 2017/18.

Even before the official start of the opera and concert season, the Philharmonic Academy, as in the past two years, features music by composers who lived and worked in Hamburg, such as Telemann and Ligeti. On 2 and 10 September 2017, Kent Nagano and the Philharmonic State Orchestra present two Academy days of concerts at the Laeiszhalle and – another premiere – at the Planetarium in Hamburg’s “Stadtpark”.

For the season opening at the State Opera, stage director Achim Freyer will present a new production of Wagner’s Parsifal, conducted by Kent Nagano. The premiere will take place on 16 September 2017. Furthermore Nagano will have the musical direction of a new production of Beethoven’s Fidelio in February 2018, staged by Georges Delnon.

The General Music Director Kent Nagano will conduct the following revivals in season 2017/18:

Berg‘s Wozzeck, the Ballet Turangalîla by Messiaen, Puccini‘s Madama Butterfly, Mozart‘s Magic Flute, Wagner‘s Walküre, Berg‘s Lulu as well as Toshio Hosokawa‘sStilles Meer.

The DVD Stilles Meer has been released on DVD in March 2017 (Euroarts). Please don’t hesitate to order your pr copy of this release.

Amongst others, Kent Nagano will conduct the Philharmonic State Orchestra Hamburg on the 1st Philharmonic Concert with Haydn’s Jahreszeiten, at a special concert on the occasion of the Internationales Musikfest Hamburg in April 2018 with works byOckeghem, Messiaen, Pärt etc., as well as at the 8th Philharmonic Concert with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5.

The Philharmonic’s chamber music series celebrates its 50-year anniversary on 1 October 2017 with a surprise program involving Kent Nagano. It is the last performance at the Laeiszhalle’s Small Auditorium for the foreseeable future. After half a century at Hamburg’s tradition-steeped concert hall, the chamber music series then moves to the chamber music hall of the Elbphilharmonie.
