DO MI SI LA DO RÉ Contest announces prestigious coast-to-coast jury

Montreal, April 29, 2020 – After launching the Do Mi Si La Do Ré (“Home Sweet Home”) Contest, which will award $10,000 in grants to the grand prizewinner, Jeunesses Musicales Canada Foundation has announced a jury of 10 members.

“We are very pleased to be able to count on the participation and commitment of these great names in Canadian classical music for this competition,” said Gabrielle Blackburn, executive director of the Foundation.

  • Renaud Loranger, Vice President Artists & Repertoire, PENTATONE and Artistic Director, Festival de Lanaudière
  • Kent Nagano, Music Director, Orchestre symphonique de Montréal
  • Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Orchestre Métropolitain (Montréal) / Music Director, The Philadelphia Orchestra and Music Director The Metropolitan Opera (New York)

This Grand Jury will evaluate the 10 selected semi-finalist videos (based on the public vote (50%) and pre-jury score (50%) and rank them from 1 to 10 in order of preference. The grand prize winner will be awarded $10,000 in grants.

The Do Mi Si La Do Ré Contest (“Home Sweet Home”)

The Do Mi Si La DO Ré Contest (Home Sweet Home) invites young instrumentalists, singers or composers of classical music to compose and perform a piece of music of three minutes or less on the theme of the musical phrase Do Mi Si La Do Ré (C E B A C D). Application deadline: Wednesday, May 13, 2020). The contest will consist of three main steps:

  • The JM Canada Foundation will publish videos meeting the requirements online on May 20, 2020.
  • Ten of the submitted videos will be selected for the final round. The score will be based on the public vote (50%) and jury’s evaluation (50%). Participants will have from May 20 to June 14, 2020, to promote their video to their networks to collect as many votes as possible ($1 = 1 vote).
  • The ten selected videos will be scored once more, by a jury composed of some of the biggest names in Canadian Classical Music.

What are the different prizes?

The JM Canada Foundation will offer $25,000 in grants as part of this competition. The first prize is a $10,000 grant, the second prize is a $5,000 grant and the third prize is a $3,000 grant. The seven other video finalists will receive a $1,000 grant each. *For candidacies with more than one participant, grants will be divided according to the number of musicians listed on the form.
