Montreal, Tuesday, September 24, 2024 – From October 18-21, Bourgie Hall of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal, celebrates Italy with its Italian Days. The event features three exciting concerts and a master class over four days, spanning four centuries of music, from the Middle Ages with Zacara da Teramo to 20th-century music with Nino Rota, offering a memorable journey through this country’s rich musical history.
Pianist Benedetto Lupo performs Casella, Rota and Scriabin
The Italian Days kick off on Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m.: renowned Italian pianist Benedetto Lupo will perform works by Casella, Rota and Scriabin. Internationally recognized as one of the greatest artists of his generation, he is acclaimed for his “keen musical intelligence and probing intellect” (Miami Herald), his innate sense of melodic line and his “meticulous technique with romantic sensitivity” (Birmingham News). He will offer Montreal audiences a remarkable musical experience thanks to his highly personal and compelling interpretations, which are thoughtful and fresh.
Quartetto Noûs performs Puccini and Verdi
Puccini and Verdi are well-known for their operas: however, both also wrote magnificent chamber music works. On Saturday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m., the Quartetto Noûs invites the public to delve into the string quartets of these two composers. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Puccini’s death, this provides a wonderful opportunity to discover his chamber music, as well as that of Verdi, two composers strongly associated with opera, and whose works for small ensembles are less frequently heard in concert.
Founded in 2011, the Quartetto Noûs displays great maturity in its approach to the vast string quartet repertoire. In just a few years, it has established itself as one of today’s most interesting chamber music ensembles. Renowned for the versatility and originality of its interpretations, as well as its participation in a wide array of innovative projects, the quartet performs widely throughout Europe, North America and Asia.
La Fonte Musica and the splendour of medieval music
On Sunday, October 20 at 2:30 p.m., Bourgie Hall welcomes the medieval music ensemble La Fonte Musica. This renowned ensemble was founded by lutenist Michele Pasotti to perform the vast repertoire ranging from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, with a particular emphasis on the Italian Trecento. Appearing for the first time in Montreal, the ensemble offers a concert focusing on Zacara da Teramo, one of the most active composers in Italy around 1400.
A master class will take place on the following day, Monday, October 21, at 11 a.m. Presented in French and English, admission is free for students and MMFA members ($10 for the general public).
The concert and master class are presented in collaboration with Reverdies Montréal.
Inaugurated in September 2011, Bourgie Hall is a 462-seat concert hall at the heart of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Possessing exceptional acoustics, it has quickly made a name for itself as one of Canada’s most beloved venues for concert music. Located in the nave of the former Erskine and American Church, its spectacular architecture includes a collection of twenty Tiffany stained glass windows unique in the country. Bourgie Hall presents over a hundred concerts yearly in various musical styles, ranging from jazz to classical works, from Baroque music to contemporary creations. Its high-calibre programming features some of the most prominent Canadian and international musicians of their generation, whether they are at the beginning of their careers or already well-established.
