Montreal, December 12, 2020 ▪ The Orchestre symphonique de Montréal is thrilled to announce the names of the first prize winners of the OSM 2020 Competition: Arin Sarkissian in the WOODWINDScategory and Robert Conquer in the BRASS category. This entirely digital 81st edition of the OSM Competition ran from October 5 to December 12, bringing together Canada’s most talented young musicians and launching the artists of tomorrow.
Arin Sarkissian, flute, (Ontario), 21
This Toronto native has performed with a number of youth orchestras in recent years. The winner of several prizes in competitions for young artists, Arin Sarkissian is currently completing his Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Texas, under the tutelage of Leone Buyse.
Robert Conquer, trombone, (Ontario), 20
Robert Conquer is the first prize winner of numerous youth competitions and, in 2019, won the 2019 Bank of Montreal Award of Excellence. Originally from Scarborough, he currently studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, with Nitzan Haroz and Matthew Vaughn.
Faithful to its mission of supporting young Canadian musicians, this year the Competition awarded more than $45,000 in cash prizes and also offered several performance and training opportunities to the winners. The international jury, which evaluated the finalists from their homes for the first time this year, was composed of eight internationally renowned musicians who are members of the world’s most prestigious orchestras. A jury of influential Canadian musicians was tasked with selecting the candidates who would advance through the preliminary and semifinal rounds.
The complete list of the winners of the many prizes generously offered by the OSM Competition’s valued partners is available here. Watch or replay the performances of all the finalists on the Competition’s website here.
