The 112th edition of the Concours Prix d’Europe, presented by the Académie de musique du Québec, will be held from June 2 to 8 at the Conservatoire de musique de Montréal. Around 30 outstanding young musicians will compete for a dozen prizes, including the prestigious $50,000 scholarship offered to the winner by the Department of Culture and Communications.

The Prix d’Europe is an annual scholarship, which was established in 1911 by J.-Arthur Paquet. He was a businessman, organist, and, at the time, treasurer of the Académie de musique du Québec. It has enabled some of the best instrumentalists, singers and composers in the province to travel abroad and benefit from some of the world’s greatest teachers.

Recent beneficiaries of the scholarship include: Valérie Milot, harp (2008); Charles Richard-Hamelin, piano (2011); Bruce Liu, piano (2015); and Elisabeth St-Gelais, voice (2023). The 2024 edition will have a jury of experienced members: soprano Marie-Danielle Parent (Prix d’Europe 1980); cellist Carole Sirois; pianist Jimmy Brière; oboist and musicologist Michel Duchesneau; and composer John Rea.

The semifinals are from June 3 to 6, and the final is on Friday, June 7. The traditional gala concert and award ceremony are scheduled for Saturday, June 8, at 7:30 p.m. The concert will feature the four winners of the 2024 competition as well as the guest of honour: Innu soprano Elisabeth St-Gelais, winner of the 2023 Prix d’Europe. Entry to the semifinals and the final rounds is free for students upon presentation of their student cards. For others, admission to the semifinals will cost $10 per session and $15 for the final. It is possible to buy $70 passes for all semifinals and $85 passes for all the semis and the final. Regular price for the gala concert is $35 ($30 for seniors and $25 for students). Tickets are available now at eventbrite.ca and prixdeurope.ca.

The Prix d’Europe for composition, created in 2009 and presented every two years, is taking a break. Candidates who wish to compete in 2025 have until May 15, 2025, to register. All the details are on www.prixdeurope.ca.
