The Montreal Greek Film Festival (MGFF) was founded as a platform for film directors, producers, screenwriters and actors of Greek descent to showcase their work in Montreal. The weeklong event encompasses opening-night and closing-night ceremonies and films that touch many genres, such as documentary, comedy, drama, as well as short films. In the last decade, Greek cinema has received numerous awards at various prestigious film festivals around the world. The MGFF aims to showcase these cinematic talents to the greater Montreal community every year.

With a dedicated and passionate staff under the direction of John Caoussias, the MGFF presents Greek films shown at major European festivals, such as the International Thessaloniki Film Festival and the Greek film festivals of New York and Los Angeles. In 2017, the closing film, Roza of Smyrna, was shown to a capacity crowd of more than 600 at the Rialto Theatre.

In 2019, the MGFF will build on its history and successes and take steps towards becoming one of the great ethnic film festivals in Montreal. This year’s seventh edition will feature four North American premieres.  With over 4,000 website visitors and close to 3,000 Facebook fans, Greek cinema has found another home here in Montreal.
