Je suis moi
Rita Tabbakh
Self-Produced, 2024

After a career spanning 18 years, Rita Tabbakh has reached the age of musical maturity, announcing Je suis moi (et je m’en fous). The album shares its name with its first track and consists of original songs by the Montreal artist of Lebanese and Acadian descent. Tabbakh has won acclaim for her roles in musicals (Dracula entre l’amour et la mort, Shéhérazade: les mille et une nuits, and La Famille Adams, among others), and is currently participating in the highly successful show Il était une voix… Piaf.

Tabbakh’s songs are fully in keeping with the lineage of great French artists, to whom she paid tribute in her previous album, Sous le ciel de Paris, with covers of classics by Aznavour, Piaf, Léo Ferré and others. The artist is building on the success of this tribute album (which reached the top 10 in Quebec), and fully assuming her role as a singer-songwriter.

She has chosen the most demanding path: that of the French chanson-à-texte style. The artist seems fully aware of this. “Je suis l’être ou ne pas être, la question qui tue peut-être (I am to be, or not to be, the question that perhaps kills),” she sings, with a succession of titles that reveal the philosophy behind her musical offering. An artist to watch.
