First developed at the National Theatre School of Canada, What Rough Beast returns to the Centaur stage in this collaboration between Theatre Ouest End and Tantalus. Three years after the pandemic halted its production as Centaur Theatre’s Brave New Looks 2020, we are thrilled to announce that the Beast is back!
What Rough Beast begins as a controversial professor is invited to speak at a progressive college, kicking off a political firestorm and tearing the campus apart. As the factions form and the rhetoric flares, on the other side of the city a young man slouches down the rabbit hole of radicalization with devastating consequences.
Through the story of seven young people, What Rough Beast engages with heated questions facing our increasingly polarized world: can compassion fight hatred? Can dialogue change a person’s mind? If not, how do we move forward?
Content Warning:
Please note that this play contains mature themes and deals with challenging topics such as radicalization, bigotry, and gun violence.
