The Urmawi Ensemble will present a unique concert as part of Garage Concert before heading off on a tour of five concerts in Nova Scotia in collaboration with Musique Royale.
The repertoire to be presented includes songs from Syrian traditions, the Muwashahat, as well as sacred chants from the early Christians of the Orient in Aramaic. Some pieces of traditional Persian music will also be performed in the program. These three traditions intersect geographically and historically, starting with the music of Syriac chants in the 4th century, followed by traditional Persian chants that also passed through the Assyrian region, and later the Muwashahat around the 17th century, which developed in Aleppo, Syria. Liturgical music and Andalusian poetry greatly influenced the development of Muwashahat music thereafter.
