University of Toronto: Gospel Choir: A Celebration of Black History Through Music

Featuring the University of Toronto Faculty of Music Gospel Choir, the University of Toronto West African Drumming and Dance Ensemble, and special guest, JUNO Award-winning gospel recording artist, Sharon Riley.

Join students from the Faculty of Music and the Toronto School of Theology as they take the audience on a musical journey with performances of African-American spirituals as well as traditional and contemporary gospel music pieces, accompanied by a dynamic gospel rhythm section.

Repertoire to include:
African-American spirituals by the Fisk Jubilee Singers and the Freedom Singers, as well as traditional and contemporary gospel pieces by popular gospel music artists such as Hezekiah Walker, Kirk Franklin, and John P. Kee.

This concert will premiere an original gospel composition by Professor Darren Hamilton and University of Toronto DMA composition student, Aaron Manswell, as well as the Canadian premiere of an arrangement of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Professor Brandon Felder (Bowie State University, Maryland, USA).
