Although titled a concert for “Good Friday”, the orchestra has always striven to present a contemplative concert with a broad spirituality. This is evident in this programme, which juxtaposes one of the most heart-wrenching cantatas for Easter, Bach’s Ich habe genug with a new work by the orchestra’s Music Director, Kevin Mallon. “Holi” is named after the Hindu festival celebrated as the Festival of Colours, Love and Spring. The day also signifies the triumph of good over evil, the arrival of Spring in India, the end of winter, and the blossoming of love.)

The concert starts with one of the most joyful and beloved sinfonias to any cantata. BWV 42, is a church cantata by Johann Sebastian Bach, composed in Leipzig for the first Sunday after Easter on 8 April 1725.

Hindemith’s Trauermusik is a suite for viola and string orchestra, written in1936 by Paul Hindemith, at very short notice, in memory of King George V of the United Kingdom.

Wilhelm Friedemann was the second child and eldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach and Maria Barbara Bach. He wrote “quirky” and unabashed music of the “Rococo” period.
