After Vancouver, the Turning Point Ensemble (TPE) celebrates its 20th anniversary in Montréal with RASAS by Sandeep Bhagwati, and two works by female composers Farangis Nurulla-Khoja and Jocelyn Morlock as part of the Homage Series.
(French follows)
Discover a unique arrangement of segments of his great epic modular composition RASAS. In the Indian artistic tradition, the “Rasas” consist of a system for classifying the emotions that form the basic components of all artistic manifestations. In this work, Sandeep Bhagwati has developed 64 sections within a matrix, which can be arranged in various combinations. Before each performance, the performers choose a combination and, through their unique arrangement, offer a different interpretation of the piece each time. Recalling the thought of the great Quebec composer Gilles Tremblay, who said, “A bird never sings the same way twice”.
Also on the programme are two works by two remarkable female composers, Jocelyn Morlock and Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, and one by composer Owen Underhill, also artistic director of TPE.
From Jocelyn Morlock, who prematurely left us in 2023, the piece Zart, a playful and colorful work inspired by elements from Mozart’s Magic Flute.
The second piece on the program, Betwixt and Between by Farangis Nurulla-Khoja, is a new double concerto for trombonist Jeremy Berkman, double bassist David Brown and the ensemble’s musicians, which highlights the unique sound universe of this uncommon composer and her strong sense of drama and timbre. The work is inspired by Gulzar’s Indian poems, which he wrote during the pandemic and dedicated to the refugees of our time.
Poetry also inspired Owen Underhill. The Widening Gyre is based on the eponymous poem by W. B. Yeats, written immediately after the First World War. In contrast to the apocalyptic future imagined by the poet, the composer’s musical world is generally more delicate and expressive, and more open-ended.
