The Maison de la culture Ahuntsic partners with the SMCQ Homage Series dedicated to composer Sandeep Bhagwati, to present this transatlantic collaboration featuring 10 performers from Berlin’s Śabdagatitāra and Montréal’s Oktoecho ensembles. Fusing diverse instruments and styles, these ensembles offer a unique musical experience of comprovisations, blending compositions and improvisations, celebrating music as a universal language, capable of transcending borders and creating bridges between seemingly distinct universes.
The Śabdagatitāra Ensemble led by Sandeep Bhagwati, is known for its bold and innovative work with non-Western instruments, creating musical bridges between worlds often perceived as distinct. They have pushed back the boundaries of contemporary music by exploring fusions of genres and cultures.
Ensemble Oktoecho, under the direction of Katia Makdissi-Warren, shares a similar mission, but focuses specifically on the convergence of music from the West, the Middle East and Canada’s Aboriginal cultures. The ensemble’s aim is to create a unique musical dialogue, inviting encounters and the discovery of singular sonorities.
Seven performers from Berlin meet up with three from Montréal to create and perform this unique concert, bringing together influences and instruments from all over the world. This collaboration highlights the importance of cultural exchange and diversity in the creative process. It shows how the diversity of the performers and their instruments can adapt to their new environment, while maintaining their own authenticity.
