Sinfonia Toronto opens their 25th Anniversary season October 21 in George Weston Recital Hall with a concert celebrating the orchestra’s tradition of presenting new works contrasted with Classical and Romantic favourites. At 8 pm Music Director Nurhan Arman introduces two world premieres, Louis Sauter’s humorous Regard de l’anniversaire XXV and Toronto composer Frank Horvat’s Magnificent Roots, a tribute to the nature and nurture of Toronto’s oldest tree and Toronto’s cultural life. Virtuoso violinist Elisso Gogibedaschwili joins the orchestra for the Canadian premiere of Otar Taktakishvili’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a vivid work reminiscent of Shostakovich, plus one of the most popular violin showpieces of all time, Zigeunerweisen, “Gypsy Airs.” The grand finale is a new twist on one of the most famous pieces in history, Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony as the orchestra plays the North American premiere of a brilliant arrangement by Sreten Krstič, leader of the renowned chamber orchestra I Solisti di Zagreb.
