MESSIAH – GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE – MARCH 29th, 7:30 P.M.
The Choir of St. Andrew & St. Paul will perform Handel’s Messiah with Ensemble Caprice, featuring superb soloists of the choir. Composed in London during the summer of 1741, over the course of about three weeks, the Messiah was premiered in Dublin during the Holy Week of 1742. It was an immense success and by the 1750s Messiah was widely performed. It was composed within the specific genre of English theatre concert oratorio that Handel himself developed. In creating his libretto, Charles Jennens interspersed texts from both the Old Testament prophets and the New Testament to depict the story of the Messiah; the prophecy of Christ’s coming, his birth, the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus, the spread of the Gospels and the promise of redemption. We promise a vibrant and outstanding version of one or the greatest choral work that no one will want to miss!
Free will offering (30$ suggested).
