Under the direction of Jean-Nicolas Trottier, the Orchestre national string ensemble of jazz de Montréal (ECO) is delighted to welcome pianist and composer Marianne Trudel and saxophonist Yannick Rieu in a program of works for strings and rhythm section. One the one hand, Marianne Trudel’s Sources suite. The other is Focus, a suite recorded in 1961 with Stan Getz on tenor saxophone, this time performed by Yannick Rieu. Focus was originally commissioned by Getz from composer and arranger Eddie Sauter. Widely regarded as a high point in both men’s careers, Getz would later describe Focus as his favorite of his records. Sauter’s orchestration did not include melodies for Getz. Instead, Sauter left space in the arrangements for Getz to improvise. The theme of the first piece, “I’m Late, I’m Late”, is almost identical to the first minutes of the second movement of Béla Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celesta. Bartók was an early supporter of Sauter, who wanted to make this piece a tribute. The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its “Core Collection”, declaring: “No one has ever arranged better for Getz, and Sauter’s luminous, shimmering scores continue to mesmerize”. Similarly, critic Stephen Cook describes Focus as “Getz’s greatest challenge and arguably his finest moment”.
