This fall, we welcome the world to Vancouver for ISCM World New Music Days 2017! As part of the celebration, VNM presents a selection of recent works for string orchestra by four composers, representing four different countries. The program will feature Linda Catlin Smith’s Orient Point (Canada), Michiko Fukazawa’s Lemminkainen’s Mother (Japan), Jay Schwartz’s Music for Orchestra III (US), and Serena Teatini’s Mi Fa (Italy).

Closing the evening will be the Canadian Premiere of Suzuki Kotoka’s In Praise of Shadows (Canada) performed by members of VEE. Inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s essay of the same name, In Praise of Shadows is a eulogy for our collective loss of the tangible; a reflection on how modern life has become increasingly alienated from materiality as we push further into virtual and digital domains.

Presented as part of ISCM World New Music Days 2017.
