We often picture J.S. Bach as a wise master, but in his late teens, he was as fiery as he was gifted. Determined to hear the great organist Dietrich Buxtehude, he set off on foot from Arnstadt to Lübeck —a staggering 400 km journey!
Hosted by CBC’s Tom Allen, the evening features harpist Lori Gemmel, pianist Jamie Parker, accordionist Michael Bridge, violinist Annalee Patipatanakoon, and the genre-expanding soprano Patricia O’Callaghan in a thrilling, wide-ranging performance.
One of three presentations in Music TORONTO’s new MUSE series (Music Unveiled, Stories, Explorations), Allens’ captivating production blends music and storytelling to bring this chapter of young Bach’s story to vivid life.
Music by J.S. Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, Sofia Gubaidulina, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Charles Gounod, and Tom Waits.
