Skataris, a duo concerto by Larysa Kuzmenko, receives its world premiere in a concert that also features Mozart’s Salzburg Symphony K. 138; Tchaikovsky’s Serenade, and the North American premiere of Letter from an Unknown Woman by Airat Ichmouratov.
The Kuzmenko concerto was written for pianist Christina Petrowska Quilico, who joins violinist Marc Djokic and Sinfonia Toronto in the performance.
This is the second concerto that Kuzmenko has written for Petrowska Quilico. She played the first concerto with the Winnipeg Symphony, Bramwell Tovey and the Toronto Symphony with Maestro Jukka Pekka Saraste. It was recorded on Centrediscs and was nominated for a Juno.
As Petrowska Quilico writes, “The difference between the concertos is that this concerto is for piano and violin. I love chamber music and asked her to write me something extremely different from the very virtuosic first concerto which is scored for full symphony. Skartaris (inspired by a volcano in Iceland) is very subtle, moody and atmospheric. Of course there are virtuoso moments for both the violin and piano but it is really more of a chamber music concerto, which I love as well. There are so many different tonal colours in the piece and I can visualize painting while playing to bring out all the sensitive nuances in the music.”
