Shostakovich composed his fifth symphony in anguish, an astonishing work that flourished under the threat of Soviet repression. At the opening, the elegant Petite suite by the French impressionist Germaine Tailleferre reveals its charms, with the sparkling colors of the Group of Six, in a deliberately light touch.
