Multi-instrumentalists and composers Joe Chambers and Andrés Vial collaborate in a new project that reflects their shared interest in exploring the links between jazz and Latin and African music.
A member of the 1960s fraternity that recorded some of Blue Note’s greatest music, Joe Chambers can claim a rightful place alongside such innovative artists as Freddie Hubbard, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner and Bobby Hutcherson. He has produced legendary recordings with Freddie Hubbard, Harold Land, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Eric Dolphy and Dizzy Gillespie, among others.
On the other hand, Montreal pianist, multi-instrumentalist and composer Andrés Vial has been nominated for a Juno Award for his works Gang of Three and When Is Ancient? He also teaches at McGill University’s Schulich School of Music and has written numerous articles on jazz and improvisation for Downbeat Magazine and Cumulus Press.
The ensemble will perform compositions by Joe Chambers, Andrés Vial, Thelonious Monk and others with instrumentation that includes piano, marimba, vibraphone, double bass, drums, xylophones and African percussion.
