Considered the pinnacle of Viennese operetta, this sparkling comedy with swirling waltzes brings the audience to Vienna during the golden era for one wild night of laughter and misunderstandings. The most famous representative of a decidedly theatrical genre, Die Fledermaus is unanimously appreciated for its exceptional musical qualities as well as its lively and astute libretto. The public is quickly seduced by the music’s festive atmosphere, which does not fail to bring a smile to the listener’s face.
In Vienna, the rich prince Orlofsky is bored out of his mind. In order to distract himself, he puts on a masked ball: Dr. Falke; Gabriel von Eisenstein; his wife Rosalinde, disguised as a Hungarian princess; Adele, her chambermaid… all are present, under various pretexts. Eisenstein seduces every woman that comes his way, including his own wife, who he does not recognize. (But she, on the other hand, immediately does). The public eventually learns that Falke seeks revenge from the humiliation he once suffered at the hands of Eisenstein, who compelled him to walk through Vienna in a bat costume, the morning after a rather alcohol-filled night. At the end of the masked ball, Eisentein, who got himself in legal troubles for having insulted a court bailiff, finally goes to jail to start his sentence. But surprise: the guests start showing up one after the other! Events then ensue in rapid succession: Adele seduces the prison director, Rosalinde confronts her husband… and finally confesses that the whole evening is nothing more than an elaborate prank devised by Falke: the revenge of the bat!
